Texturing in Photoshop

NAV15AP

2. jakso lukuvuonna 2016-2017

This time you’re going to model something in 3DS Max and texture it in Photoshop.
Start with modelling an object. This object should have multiple similar objects such as table with four legs.

Select all similar objects and apply unwrap uvw modifier and open the uv editor.

In the editor move the parts so that same parts are on top of each other. In this way when texturing you won’t have to draw same thing many times but it will be added to every piece simultaneously.

Save UVs and render the uvw template and save it as .png. Open file in Photoshop.

You’ll need to create new layer and press the key D if the color of the brush isn’t black already. After selecting the new layer and moving it beneath the template layer, press alt + del. This will color the empty layer black and now the template lines should be visible.

Select around the lines with polygonal lasso tool. After selecting one object hold shift and click to select another one. In this way you can select multiple objects.

When you have selected everything create a new layer and with brush tool color them as you wish.

If you want to add some texture to your object it can be done easily. Select texture you want to apply to your object. This can be whatever you want for example wood or stone. Place the texture so it covers your object and make adjustments so that it looks seamless. Now select opacity for the texture layer so that is shows trough the color but won’t change the color you have chosen. Select with the quick selection tool your objects from the color layer and select inverse. Now activate the texture layer and erase the areas you don’t want in your texture.

Save the file as .png and use it in the 3DS max object from the material editor. Open material editor by pressing M. Create material. Right click and choose standard material.

Right click again and select bitmap from maps and use your texture .png file.

Draw connection from bitmap to diffuse color. Remember to check show shaded material in viewport and drag your material to desired object.
